From Australia to Singapore with Love

Australia is famous not only for its beauty but also for its wildlife. The country is particularly known for their exceptional koalas. Australians value koalas and this time,  they want to share the joy of having them. In an effort to strengthen the diplomatic relations of Australia and Singapore, Australia will loan their four koalas for a specific period of time.

Singaporeans are happy of this news because now they can see koalas live without going outside of the country. The koalas are also part of the celebrations of SG50. So, here are details that we should know about koalas:

  • Unveiling: The four koalas are in fact here. The unveiling took place on May 20, 2015 following their quarantine period.

  • Habitat: The koalas will live at Singapore Zoo for six months before returning to their natural habitat.
  • Food: Koalas do not just eat any grassy things. They will only survive on a eucalyptus leaves diet. We do not have any eucalyptus leaves here so the only solution is for Qantas to fly food for them twice a week.
  • Fun facts: Other people think that koalas are bears. Koalas are not bears and in fact, they are marsupials. Marsupials are born immature and they develop in their mother’s pouch. Koalas are nocturnal animals – they are awake at night and sleep during the day. A young koala is called joey and it stays in their mother’s pouch for six to seven months. Joeys also ride on their mother’s abdomen or back and leaves their home when they reach one to three years old.

What is an “Apparent Life-Threatening Event”?

We do not hear about Apparent Life-Threatening Event (ALTE) often but this happens oh so sudden without giving us time to prepare. With this, it is important that we know what this means so we can understand it and apparently share it to other people to prevent this from happening.

A helping hand

ALTE refers to abrupt occurrence of alarming symptoms like no breathing (also called apnea), coughing, change in color and gagging of children below one year old. As parents, our ultimate goal is to see our kids grow happy and healthy so the least that we can do is be cautious and keep ALTE at bay. ALTE is not a specific ailment. As mentioned earlier, ALTE involves group of symptoms that happen abruptly in infants and even young children.

We have to know that ALTE is not related to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome no matter the similarity. There are many cases of ALTE here in Singapore so it is crucial that we are oriented. Here are some truths about ALTE:

  • Causes: The most common cause of ALTE is gastroesophageal reflux disease. Other common causes include nervous system disorders (the ones that lead to brain tumors and seizures) and infections (like meningitis). There are also less common causes like partial or complete blockage of the child’s airways, heart disease and metabolic disorders. However, according to experts, almost fifty per cent of the cases of ALTE are undetermined.

  • Symptoms: In most cases, parents and caregivers are alarmed because of the unexpected change in the breathing of infants. When this happens, it is important that we keep calm so it will not cloud our judgement. Parents or caregivers should act immediately when they notice the infant not breathing for more than twenty seconds. If the infant’s color is changing to red, pale or blue, it is an indicator that the infant is suffering ALTE. Other symptoms include gagging and choking.
  • Diagnosis: Doctors are the only people here that can diagnose ALTE. When we bring our infants in hospitals or clinics, they will usually ask key questions. We have to answer the questions truthfully so they will know. After that, the doctors will conduct physical examination for defects and abnormalities. The physical examination is then followed by laboratory tests like liver function, spinal fluid, stool, urine, imaging tests and many more.
  • Treatment: If the cause is identified, treatment is possible. For infants who have serious problems (especially those who undergo CPR), they need to be hospitalized for monitoring. Parents or caregivers need to be trained in CPR for their infant’s safety.

5 Simple Steps to a Safer and More Effective Workout Routine

Working out can be very beneficial especially if you’re doing it to build your muscles and strength. However, it’s also important to remember that taking shortcuts in exercising won’t get you better and faster results. Instead, follow these easy and simple steps to help you maintain your A-game in working out.

workout

  1. Eat All the Right Foods. Eating the right foods is one of the most important factors in making your workout routine more effective. Without the right pre- and post-workout meal, you won’t be able to exercise properly and getting the results that you want may become difficult for you. So before you start working out, fuel your body with carbohydrates-rich foods like a banana or a whole wheat toast. For your post-workout meal, opt for lean poultries like chicken to get iron and zinc, and some baked potatoes to replenish the electrolytes you’ve lost while working out.

  1. Stay Hydrated. Other than eating the right kind of foods, staying hydrated is also important in nourishing your body before working out. As much as possible, drink about eight ounces of water an hour before you start exercising to keep you hydrated while working out. If you can’t stand the bland taste of water, you can infuse it with vegetables and fruits like watermelon and blueberries for an added zing of flavour.

  1. Practise the Correct Exercise Form. A good way to avoid injuries while working out is to exercise using the correct form. When doing squats, make sure that you look straight ahead to avoid hurting your lower back. If you’re doing hip raises, place a cushion between your legs to strengthen your inner-thigh muscles and keep your knees from falling outward. For push-ups, use some hexagonal-shaped dumbbells to relieve pressure on your wrists and hands.

  1. Do Some Stretching. Stretching is one of those extra steps that are quite easy to forget when working out. So take that yoga mat out of your storage, and start performing some stretches to increase your flexibility, help you recover faster and to improve your overall health. Other than that, stretching is also a great way to ease muscle tension and soreness from a hard workout.

  1. Listen to Your Body. Trying out new workout techniques to boost your current routine is good, but remember to take things slow first and listen to how your body reacts to the new technique. Although pushing your body helps in getting better results, it’s also important to pay attention to some warning signs like fatigue, dizziness and unnatural pain, as this can be your body’s way of telling you to take a break in exercising even for a bit.

While it’s important to keep your body fit and healthy, it’s also important that you perform your workout routines safely. Remember, getting a fit body is useless if you’ll get a permanent injury in return.

Marriage Myths You Should Stop Believing

We are often told that getting married will make us happy. That we get to live happily ever after with the man of our dreams, when oftentimes, it is not the case. Believing in many marriage myths is what causes us to create unrealistic expectations, which later leads to disappointments. A good way to avoid such feeling is to stop believing in unhealthy marriage myths and here are some of those myths that are definitely worth leaving behind.

  1. Love is all that matters and all you’ll need in marriage. While love is a prerequisite in marriage, it won’t really get you farther than the altar. Other than love, there are other factors that you’ll need to work on to make your marriage work, and these factors include commitment, kindness, realistic expectations, tolerance, shared values and more importantly, communication. So stop believing that love is all that’s necessary in having a good marriage.
  1. You complete each other’s shortcomings. Complementing each other can be very helpful in establishing a good relationship, but thinking and expecting that your partner will make up for your shortcomings and complete you is one of those unrealistic expectations in marriage. Yes, you can ask your partner to help you in your shortcomings, but never think that he or she can complete you.

  1. You share anything and everything. Although sharing means caring, sharing almost everything is quite unrealistic too. You should never feel obliged to share everything with your partner and the same thing goes for him or her as well. Also, don’t expect that your partner will share everything with you, when you yourself isn’t into the idea of sharing everything with him or her.
  1. Having babies will bring you closer. Other than marriage, babies are what makes a couple forever entwined. However, some studies showed that even the birth of the first child pushes people apart as one parent starts to focus more on the child, leaving her partner alone most of the time.
  1. Everything falls into place when you’re with Mr. or Mrs. Right. Believing in Mr. and Mrs. Right isn’t entirely wrong. What’s wrong is believing that everything will fall perfectly into place when you’re with them, because in reality, there will still be times when things will get rough whether or not you’re with your Mr. or Mrs. Right.

Both time and effort are necessary for marriage to work. So instead of believing in these marriage myths, you should just spend your time nurturing yourself and your relationship with your partner to ensure that your marriage become a lifetime bond.
