What You Need to Know About Double Eyelid Surgery

In recent years, there is a trend in East and Southeast Asia. No longer are people crazy about nose jobs and breast augmentation, but it seems interest has shifted to having double eyelids. It is so popular in the region that double eyelid surgery is the most common aesthetic procedure in Singapore in 2018.

What is double eyelid surgery, and do you need it?

Why it is Done

Double eyelid surgery is usually recommended to people with droopy upper eyelids, baggy eyelids, and those who have excess skin on the upper and/or lower eyelids and baggy eyes. Moreover, it can also improve peripheral vision especially if the skin around the eyes is sagging. However, the recent trend is mostly for cosmetic purposes. People with no folds on the upper eyelids feel that having double eyelids is more attractive because they make the eyes appear younger.

Risks of Double Eyelid Surgery

Any surgical procedure, even double eyelid surgery entails risks. If not done properly or if done by an inexperienced beautician, double eyelid surgery can result in infection, irritated or dry eyes, bleeding, scarring, eye muscle injury, blurred vision, negative reactions to anesthesia, skin discoloration and difficulty closing the eyes.

There are even cases that resulted in loss of vision. Which is why blepharoplasty should only be done by a plastic surgeon or an ophthalmologist, not a beautician. There are also some guidelines that you need to follow prior to the scheduled operation especially if you are taking medications.

Blepharoplasty Options

Currently, there are three approved methods for double eyelid surgery. Which technique suits you will depend on your anatomy, the effect you want to achieve, quality of your skin, and the fat tissue volume on the upper eyelids.

  • Buried suture and beads. Scarring is minimal with these methods even if the skin of the patient is not ideal, plus they do not need an incision. However, these are not recommended for people with a lot of fat tissue on the eyelids.
  • Incision. This method is recommended for those who want the eyelashes to angle upwards and to have wider double eyelids. However, it can sometimes leave visible scars on the eyelids, so it is important to determine if the person has skin conditions that can result in ugly scarring.

Non-Surgical Options

If you are hesitant about undergoing plastic surgery, there are non-surgical options that you can try. All you need are tools to make your eyes appear livelier and rounder. The most common materials used are eyelid glues and tapes.

These are temporary and can be removed when you need to wash off your makeup. There are some risks involved but as long as you don’t have allergic reactions to the materials and you use the glue properly, the eyelid tapes are safe and convenient.
