How to Keep Your Room Allergy-Proof in 5 Steps

How to Keep Your Room Allergy-Proof in 5 Steps

Getting the sniffles isn’t a lot to worry about, but when you struggle with nasal stuffiness and are sneezing every time you get to your room, there’s a good chance that it’s full of dust and other allergens, and these can make it difficult for you to relax and even sleep.

To keep your room allergy-proof, here’s what you need to keep in mind:

Control your humidity

Singapore can be pretty humid, and humidity is one of the biggest factors that can trigger or worsen allergic reactions. This is where having a humidifier is definitely worth the investment. With a humidifier, you can control and adjust the humidity in your room and keep it comfortable enough for your nasal passages. Being able to filter your air also helps remove any particulates in the air that could trigger allergic reactions. Be sure to change these said filters every three months in order to prevent any trapped particlces from getting back in.

Protect your bedding

Your bedding can be an excellent breeding place for mites, ticks, and fleas, and these bugs can travel from foam to foam if you’re not careful about whatever gets onto your mattress. To keep these and other allergens from your bedding, be sure to cover your mattress and pillows with a zippered allergen-proof cover.

Vacuum and de-clutter

Vacuuming or sweeping for dust once a week is the most important part in keeping a room allergy-free. Ideally, you want to start every vacuuming session with the highest shelves and working your way down tight nooks and crevices. You should also keep your room as clutter-free as possible in order to prevent dust particles from settling into small, tight corners, as can be the case with books.

Keep pets away

Pet fur contains traces of saliva, urine, and even dead skin or flakes that can become airborne and trigger allergic reactions, which can be made worse by the warm temperature and humid tropical climate in the country. If you want to keep pets, be sure to keep their fur trimmed and combed, and don’t forget to bathe them regularly.

Reduce mold and mildew

Mold and mildew can thrive in damp areas like the bathroom and around leaky pipes, and aside from sending spores out into the air and triggering allergic reactions, they can also damage areas of your home. Leaky pipes and tiny cracks and crevices can even attract pests like roaches, which can leave droppings that trigger asthma for both children and adults.

To prevent both, you need to make sure that not only are there no leaks in your pipes and faucets, but also that all tiny cracks are sealed and all garbage is properly disposed of.

5 Interior Design Mistakes You Should Never Make Again

Design is something that’s highly personal, while there is no one set of rules that you need to follow to make your own HDB flat or condo unit in Singapore look good, there are many ways and things you can do to get that design aesthetic wrong. Here are a few interior design mistakes you need to stay away from as much as possible:

Not testing the color

It’s critical to test out the different variations of a particular paint color in any room or area before fully applying it. This is because you’re not just looking at the color of the paint when choosing one for your interior: you’re also looking at how well it works with the light, how well it works with the walls’ size and texture, and how well it coordinates with the rest of your furniture.

Styling around your TV

If there is one thing you should base your living room’s style around, it’s not your TV – there are better focal points that you can use that will give a much better effect. A better way to do this would be to design the entire area of your living room first, and only then adding the TV. This will make your sitting space look and feel a lot better to be in.

Not adding houseplants

A little green never hurt any interiors – in fact, adding a few houseplants here and there can bring a lot more joy and calm in the atmosphere than you think, and when given sunlight, watered, and taken care of properly, it can keep giving that for a very long time.

Repeating the same fabric or pattern

Patterns are great only when they’re limited to a small number of pieces, such as your curtains or your sofa pillows. Using matching fabrics or patterns for all parts of a room is tacky, and rarely used even by professional designers. Instead, keep things more varied and interesting by adding complementary colors and varying patterns, especially when it comes to window treatments, sofas, and chairs.

Pushing up all furniture against the walls

Pushing furniture against the walls isn’t always the same thing as maximizing space. While it might be better to push heavy things like bookshelves against the wall, doing so for all your appliances can actually make your spaces feel smaller. One alternative to this is to instead do the opposite: arrange furniture away from the walls in a strategic way. In the case of upholstery and tables, like chairs and sofas, it’s much better to group them in the center of the space to allow for cozier conversations.

Basic Items for a Starter Sewing Kit

If you are new to sewing and you have no idea what to get for your first sewing kit, don’t worry, because we will cover all the basic tools you will need for your new hobby.

Scissors

Most experts in sewing will advise you to get three types of scissors to cover all the requirements for your future projects. First, you must find quality dressmaking shears in a hobby shop in Singapore. This type of scissors should be able to cut through any type of fabric, so that means you’re not supposed to use to cut other materials. Next, you will need small scissors with sharp points for threads, clip curves, and seam lines, because the first pair of scissors are too big for such tasks. Lastly, you will need utility scissors for cutting other items.

Measuring Tools

You will need a set of measuring tools such as a see-through 12-inch ruler or yardstick, a 6-inch metal sewing gauge, and a measuring tape that is at least 60 inches long. If you need to create bigger projects in the future, you might want to buy longer measuring tapes. The see-through rulers are useful for creating patterns, while the sewing gauge is used to keep a consistent measurement while working on a piece. Rulers used for drafting and other crafts and arts can also be used for sewing, especially if you’re planning to try quilting.

Marking Tools

These are used to mark your measurements and patterns before cutting the fabrics, but the tool you will use will depend on the type of fabric that needs to be marked. Marking chalks and pens are used for less stable fabrics like wool and fleece, because the marks will disappear or dissolve. For cotton fabrics, you will need a tracing wheel and tracing paper. You might also want to stock up on painter’s tape, especially if you’re still learning how to sew straight lines, and hem tapes to hold the folded hems in place while you’re sewing.

Seam Ripper and Rotary Cutter

These are also cutting tools like the scissors, but have special functions such as ripping stitches and cutting fabrics. Some sewing machines include a seam ripper, but in case you don’t have one yet, find a piece that has a comfortable grip and sharp tips. The rotary cutter is used for cutting through curves, long fabrics, and making sure that the fabric edges are cut straight. You will need a cutting mat to use the rotary cutter to protect your furniture from scratches.

Iron, Pressing Cloths, and Hams and Rolls

Most newbies forget basic pressing items, but these items help create clean edges. Get a steam iron, ironing board, pressing ham for hard-to-reach areas, and pressing cloths to protect fabrics from direct heat.

Finally, you will need an assortment of safety pins, needles, threads, buttons, patches, zippers, snaps, and a pin cushion, magnetic pin holder, thimble, and a container to hold all the sewing tools.

Common Household Items That Can Clean Your Car

Take a look at your bathroom or kitchen and you’ll be surprised how much of those you can use to clean your car. When you make use of items you have at home, cleaning your automobile is much easier and more straightforward. They are cheap, gentle and easy to use on your vehicle.

1. Hair Conditioner
A hair conditioner that contains lanolin in it will help clean your car easily. Plus, it leaves a shiny finish to your car’s surface, making it look freshly waxed. Your hair conditioner can make your locks look shiny, and it’ll do the same too your shoes, tools and car, too.

2. Cola
Unpredictable sunny-rainy weather can turn your windshield into a streaky and blotchy mess. Get rid of the dirt by pouring some cola over your windshield glass, but be sure to stretch a heavy absorbent fabric along the bottom part of the windshield to protect the paint of the car hood. The cola bubbles will simply fizz away the dirt and grime. Rinse thoroughly the sticky cola afterwards, or else you’ll end up attracting more dust and dirt.

3. Vodka
When the windshield-washer runs out, search through your liquor cabinet to make your own washer refill. Mix three cups of vodka, four cups of water and two teaspoons of dishwashing liquid. Shake it well and pour the mixture into the reservoir.

4. Wet Wipes
Wet wipes—you may even have this in your glove compartment. You can quickly clean your car windows, windshield, dashboard and mirrors with it. What could be easier than this?

5. Window Cleaner
Keep your headlights clean and bright (and yourself safe) by using a window cleaner to polish it clean. Wet a lint-free fabric with a window cleaner and rub it vigorously onto your headlights to remove water stains and grime.

6. Ammonia
If you have dirty windshield wiper blades, they will streak the glass rather than cleaning it and keeping it free from debris. Make a solution of one quart cold water and a quarter cup of household ammonia. Lift the blades gently and wipe both sides with paper towel or soft cloth soaked in the solution. Before lowering them back to their places, wipe them dry with a lint-free cloth.

Your car may be one of your biggest investments, but it doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune to keep it clean. If the time doesn’t really allow for a thorough car wash, these household items can be your quickest solution until your next professional car washing in an automobile shop.
