Understanding Child Abuse

Here in Singapore, child abuse cases rose in 2012. There were 247 suspected child abuse cases in 2012 which was a lot higher compared to the 176 child abuse cases in 2008. According to MSF (Social and Family Development Ministry), child abuse traverses race, education of the parents/caregivers and household income.

Because of the rising cases, a committee is created. Family Justice Committee made recommendations so that teachers, lawyers and doctors can spot victims of child abuse and family violence. Apart from the committee, MSF provided counsellors in every school too. MSF identified different forms of abuse – physical neglect and emotional abuse.

The society should understand child abuse. While there are parents who think they are only disciplining the child, they need to know the distinction between it. The change should begin in the home, not outside. If you are a parent, you should change your reactions for the sake of your child. Here are some ways on how you can change your reactions:

Child-Abuse (1)

1. Learn to control emotions. There are parents who are not successful at controlling their emotions. When their children commit something (or even if they do not), emotions burst. It is important that you learn to control your emotions.

2. Identify what is age appropriate. Some parents do not realize the age of their children. Parents expect that children behave like adults but they are not adults. Parents should learn how to identify age appropriate tasks or behaviour so they will not be angered and frustrated at all times.

3. Develop new set of parenting skills. Learning to control your emotions is a good start but it does not end there. You have to develop new set of parenting skills for your children. You can begin by learning different but appropriate discipline approaches or techniques.

4. Get professional help. If you want to break the cycle of abuse but you find it hard to do so, it is time that you get professional help. There is nothing wrong if you get professional help. You should do this while it is not too late for your children.

The Benefits of a Good Laugh

Are you familiar with medical clowning? This is an idea developed at Haifa University, Israel. Patients of the Children’s Cancer Foundation here in Singapore got to see and experience medical clowning. “Dush the clown” along with some toys, balloon animals and hand puppets aim to give smile and happiness to children. Medical clowning is also therapeutic for elderly especially for those who are enduring dementia.

Medical clowning will help reduce patient’s fears. Apart from that, medical clowning can also assist patients to recuperate faster. Laughing is indeed the best medicine. There are many benefits of a good laugh. Here are some benefits of a good laugh:

1.       Boosts immune system

You may find laughing irrelevant when it comes to boosting your immune system but that is where you are wrong. Laughing can indeed boost the immune system. Research found that when you laugh, you release IgA (immunoglobulin A) which can fight infections and bacteria.

2.       Decreases stress

No doubt that laughing can decrease stress levels. You should know that when you laugh, stress hormones (like epinephrine and cortisol) will decrease. The presence of these hormones can restrain the immune system.

3.       Makes coping easier

There are things that we cannot control in life. You lost a loved one or a job; it is disheartening but if you laugh, you will surely feel light and at ease. Laughing can indeed make coping easier. Yes, we cannot control things but we can control how we react to such things.

4.       Improves blood flow and pressure

You may not believe it but laughter can improve blood flow and pressure. Research found out that laughter revives blood circulation and amplifies blood’s oxygenation. Laughter, simple as it may seem, can improve cardiovascular health.

There are many benefits that you will find. Regardless of what you are going through or what you want to get rid of, it is important that you start laughing.
